Sirion Individuum

Writer: Hubert ÖsterleHubert Österle

The post Scenario 2040 describes how the digital coach Sirion advises Laura in financial and other areas of life and takes over complicated tasks from her. Question for you: Will you be using a digital coach like Sirion in 2040?

Many react with the gut decision “No way. I’m not going to make myself dependent on a machine.” On closer inspection, most people change their mind, because there are weighty arguments in favor of using it.

Sirion operates based on Laura’s needs. Sirion knows Laura understands little about investment. Sirion helps Laura avoid the effort of learning about finances, saving her energy, which can also be termed convenience. Laura doesn’t need to trust a bank advisor she suspects is primarily looking out for the bank’s interests. Sirion provides Laura with security. Laura sees that Sirion’s proposal builds retirement capital, thus satisfying the need for capital. It proves to herself and her friend Martha that she can achieve something, boosting her status.

If Laura were honest with herself, she would admit that with Sirion’s help, she can hide her embarrassing lack of knowledge about financial matters. Delegating finances to Sirion is a convenient solution that boosts her self-esteem. It enhances her standing among friends. Sirion’s explanations give Laura a broad knowledge base. Sirion reduces Laura’s overwhelm and handles the complexity of the world, thus providing security. All of this boosts her self-worth.

Sirion also gives health recommendations to Laura, though she dislikes physical activities. She prefers enjoying a beer or chocolate on the couch while watching an entertaining movie. Hedonia, or short-term pleasure, often outweighs Eudaimonia, long-term well-being, for Laura. She knows she can’t stick to her diet and exercise goals without outside help; Sirion assists her health.

Why shouldn’t Laura use the AI coach Sirion? Laura loses her competence in all areas she relies on Sirion for; her knowledge diminishes. She relinquishes power to Sirion and its controllers. Her self-worth suffers as she realizes her dependence on Sirion. Sirion’s subscription becomes more expensive each year, eating into Laura’s capital. Laura no longer discusses with her friends how to eat healthily, achieve homeownership, choose the best political party, or decide on shoes; instead, she consults the more knowledgeable Sirion. Analog community diminishes in importance while virtual community via social media and digital coaches grows with little emotional attachment.

The 2040 scenario with Sirion and Laura assumes the following: Apple has observed hundreds of millions of users for many years, deriving a behavioral model. This model describes how actions like saving with an ETF plan affect user well-being, following the UN’s model monitored by the Human Life Board.

The issues mentioned against using Sirion persist even if it perfectly meets Laura’s needs. But what if Apple’s needs, as Sirion’s ruler, take precedence without Laura realizing? Then Apple’s needs for capital and power drive recommendations to Laura. Sirion prioritizes revenue and profit over Laura’s needs. Or Sirion manipulates Laura in favor of technocrats or other elites, such as political leaders.

In summary, once again the question: Will you use a digital coach like Sirion in 2040? Can we stop this development? Hardly. Can you live satisfactorily in 2040 without a digital coach? Hardly. Can individuals escape the power of technologists? Hardly. Will politics preserve individual sovereignty? Hardly.

If Sirion aims to optimize Laura’s quality of life, it’s a huge gain for all Lauras worldwide because Sirion knows more than Laura. If Sirion aims to maximize technocrats’ capital and power, Lauras and Hugos become consumers and labor slaves.
